My Name Is Yip: A Novel by Paddy Crewe

5.0

Well, there we have it, my first 5-star read of 2022.

This book is incredibly difficult for me to review. It's one of those books that, just, grabbed my soul. It gave me such a rare reading experience, putting it down left me feeling almost empty, as if, I didn't quite know what to read after it, because whatever it was, it wouldn't be this.

This novel makes quite a few stylistic choices that will for sure, put some readers off of it entirely. For me, it was absolute perfection. This novel has such a fantastic voice, Yip Tolroy quickly cemented himself as one of my favorite characters to grace the world of literature. Yip's story is not a happy one, it's one of suffering, pain and injustice, despite this, I couldn't pull myself away. Though it was utterly heart-breaking to watch the horrors that Yip endures, I'm so damn delighted that I chose to read this novel.

The fact that this masterpiece is a debut is still shocking to me. Paddy Crewe could well be on his way to becoming one of my favorite authors.
