The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories by H.P. Lovecraft

3.0

All of the best stories in this collection are in the second half (although I did like the first one - 'Dagon', which was short and sharp). 'The Colour Out of Space' and 'The Whisperer in Darkness' are the best, to my mind. 'The Shadow over Innsmouth' is also good (if rather stretched out). 'Herbert West- Reanimator' stood out because of its odd tone, in which Lovecraft almost seems to be playing it for laughs. 'The Call of Cthulhu' itself was okay, but disappointing given its lofty reputation.

The rest all follow a fairly set formula and vary in quality from 'okay' to 'bewildering' to 'a bit rubbish'. It's interesting to observe the improvement in Lovecraft's writing over time, but I can't say this collection has inspired me to dig any deeper into his work - I think I'll take my enjoyment of the last few stories and leave it at that.
