femmebrainedreads 's review for:
The Fear
by Spencer Hamilton
MILD SPOILERS but it doesn’t matter cuz this book sucks
this was prettyyyyy awful. In fact, this was so bad, I legit thought it was a satire of the pandemic/political horror sub genre but after reading reviews and since it’s not listed as such on goodreads, turns out the true horror was that this was meant to be taken seriously! honestly, the book probably would’ve gotten 3 stars out of me if it was a satire cuz it feels very unserious. like those lesbian exploitation films of the 70s/80s or those bad attempts at parody movies from the 2010s.
this is listed as an adult book but the writing was extremely juvenile, I’ve read middle grade books that talked down less to the audience, had better structure and portrayed its themes more maturely than this book.
jack was so awful. The only enjoyable part of this was when ash finally left her ass and I struggle to understand why she fell in love with her in the first place. was there ever love? I could feel it on ash’s end but not jack. this felt like an unrequited love friendship than an actual marriage, made even worse by the fact that jack had zero redeeming qualities. I know ash hurts from carrying this book on her back!
this book wasn’t scary at all. I felt nothing but annoyance from this both cuz the book was so bad and because I could’ve spent this time reading a book with lesbian rep that was actually GOOD. but back to the horror aspect failing; you really expected me to feel threatened by something called The Cardigan Man? That’s as scary sounding as The Bye-Bye Man and when you have the same thing over and over layered with some weird ass sex stuff that was totally unnecessary and felt like a fetishization of trauma you make for the one of the worst villains in horror book history. The claustrophobic feeling I was supposed to get from the mcs being trapped was nonexistent cuz everything is so poorly developed so scrap that too. The landlord was a bad caricature so not a single scary aspect of this book worked.
The last battle with ash and the landlord felt so weird like you already had jack have a sexual exchange with a guy, you really had to have the lesbian character go thru something like that too???
