Ugh, I really have a hard time with people who have no idea how to be a parent. I get that it's not for everyone. But JFC, get your act together and do your best. Or seek an alternative. Of course, it wouldn't be a compelling story if there wasn't unnecessary heartache and suffering. This story was a perfect example of Ocham's Razor. Oh! And that ending! For sure, I didn't see that coming.
