WARNING: THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY MOST DEFINITELY NOT A SLOW BURN. Just because the characters don’t immediately hook up the second they meet each other it doesn’t mean it’s a slow burn. The entire romance takes place over one week.
There was a lot of miscommunication and assumptions from both characters in the beginning which was a little frustrating but I appreciated the chronic illness representation even if the whole “conceal don’t feel” part of it had me singing Frozen’s Let It Go in the back of my head for most of the book.
I liked the setup and adventure in the first half but when the romance kicked in it started to fall flat for me. I didn’t feel the chemistry and the grand professions were just awkward. The magic system was pretty vague and glossed over except when something needed to happen for the plot, and the resolution to the coup attempt was rushed and most of the motivations and logic felt cheesy and underdeveloped.
Surprisingly, I didn’t hate the book. It was fun enough if you actually turn your brain all the way off, and I did roll my eyes in a silly way at some of the puns and tongue in cheek writing.
