In Heart of the Sun Warrior, heroine Xingyin's hard-earned peaceful life on the moon is threatened with the discovery of strange magic. The formula of this sequel mirrors the first book but is still engaging, with constant action sequences. The magical system is visually descriptive and fun. But the love triangle, which is influenced by external forces, is unnecessary and complicated. These characters become less likeable as the story progresses. The message of redemption is mixed. However, the love story does not significantly interfere with the enjoyment of most of the book until the ending, which is anti-climactic.
