Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum
by Antonia Hylton
challenging
informative
reflective
sad
medium-paced
Hylton’s book shed light on an unfamiliar topic and unknown biases; the patient and employee stories drove home the systemic racism, mental illness, and the fight to provide care for them. Fundamentally changed the way that I perceive and understand mental illness.
Graphic: Confinement, Hate crime, Mental illness, Suicide, Medical content
Minor: Rape, Fire/Fire injury
