I finally caved and picked up Playground after seeing it constantly pop up on my feed—and wow, this one is not for the faint of heart. The premise is deceptively simple: three low-income families are lured to the remote cliffside estate of Geraldine Borden, a mysterious inventor who's offering a generous payout. All the parents have to do is allow their children to test her long-awaited “revolutionary” playground equipment. But hidden deep within the bowels of her gothic mansion are devices never meant to be seen—let alone played on.
Let me be real: parts of this book made me physically nauseous. The gore is unrelenting, and the horror is sharp and personal. Still, I couldn't look away. Once I pushed through the most disturbing scenes, I was hooked, desperate to know who would survive and how this nightmare would end. Think SAW, but with children—and somehow even more twisted.
While I’m not sure if I’ll be diving back into the world of splatterpunk any time soon, I’m glad I braved this one. If you’re into extreme horror and can handle the darkest of content, Playground is a wild, blood-soaked ride you won’t forget.
Will these broken kids rise above the horrors around them—or be consumed by the madness?
Fair warning: this book is brutally graphic and definitely not for everyone.
