Wizard and Glass by Stephen King

4.0

This is a shockingly romantic and heartfelt entry into Stephen King's bibliography. The gunslinger's story admittedly goes on longer than it needs to and I don't know if the modern-day stuff after it ends adds a ton to the rest of the book, but the story itself is a powerful one. Its themes of sacrifice and love work well to reinforce the larger themes of the series, and the ending with Roland's ka-tet declaring themselves dedicated to the hunt for the Tower is one of the most touching in the series. The aesthetic of this story is a good one, King writes the Weird West genre in a way that maintains his gleeful horrific prose while celebrating tropes of old Spaghetti Westerns. One of the weaker entries in the series, but it remains a strong novel overall.
