Okay, I was a hater for the first 80% of this book, but I’ll admit I was hooked in the last 20%. Why was breath constantly described as a hot gust or stream? Alissa could be described as morally grey, but until the very end, she doesn’t really have any clear incentive or compass (pun intended.) She spends much of the book believing she can wield evil power for good which I found to be so infuriatingly naive. Why am I reading this YA romantasy thinking about Audre Lorde’s master’s house??? This was indeed twisty, and I liked that quite a bit. The writing was surprisingly beautiful at points. All around, it is so hard to make a book, and this shows real promise!!
