Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton

3.0

Book seven in the "Anita Blake" series, 'Burnt Offerings' is quite good, but the quality of the mystery aspect (or at least, the "whodunnit?") of the writing past "Bloody Bones" has been moved more to the background, leaving the romantic triangle and the erotic content more to the forefront of this good series.

That said, there's also an "elevation" issue a bit, too. The villains just seem to gain more power - not necessarily more depth - and likewise, so does Anita Blake, though she's still a complex character, she's starting to take a back seat to her every-growing and ever-changing powers. Also, her waffling of "The Vampire or the Werewolf" love angst starts to get a little repetitive (it reminds me a bit of Stephanie Plum). Still, the storyline in this one is interesting, there are side characters aplenty worth reading, and as such, it was worthwhile, and the series begins so strongly that I'd suggest you pick up the first few books at least.
