What a great short story! I really loved the setting this was written in, with a great main character and an interesting and engaging plot. I really liked how the world building was built into the plot progression and added new interesting layers to the world. The magic system is not overly complex, but super fun and creative. Some side characters are kept more simple, which I find legit as the story is still a short one. The main character is super cool and I liked it and their background a lot. The story managed very well to pull me in within the span of a few pages and got me intrigued super fast. Something super important in a short story if this sort. The plot is interesting and believable and keeps one engaged as it is not massively clear how this all ends, despite having some predictable but enjoyable elements. Definitely worth the read after having read Elantris!

Obviously I can’t compare a short story exactly to a full length book, so my rating is with a short story spectacle on.
