Superman: The Golden Age, Volume 1 by Jerry Siegel
3.0
Rating: 3.5 stars
This is a tough collection to rate.
This volume is packed with action and vigilante justice. This is NOT the Superman we have all come to love. He has no problem with criminals dying. He is arrogant. He doesn’t fly, just jumps real far.
As a lover of history, these 1939 issues give me a glimpse into America’s past culture. I get to examine what publishers thought would sell. A hero to save us from political corruption, gambling, delinquents from the slums, reckless driving, and a bald genius that could be the precursor to Lex Luther.
In comparison to other comic book franchise beginnings this was not dull, but I couldn’t in good conscience give it a higher rating due to the racist, sexist and classist content. I know some will read this and say it was a different time, but that is no excuse in today’s tumultuous climate.
