Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1 by Hiromu Arakawa

Consider this my review for the whole 27-volume series. It's hardly worth reviewing each volume individually, especially given the serial format.

I had been meaning to give this series a try for quite some time, and I finally got around to it this month. I was really impressed. It's a compelling story that did a good job of pulling me in as a reader and getting me invested in the characters - even the secondary ones. The art is well done, and considering the large number of characters I was impressed with how easy it was to keep them all straight - especially considering that 8 out of 10 characters are all wearing the same military uniform.

I had an easy time pictureing this one adapted as an anime. The episodic nature of the early chapters probably helped this quite a bit, but even as the story arc gets more involved I think you can really see where episode breaks would take place. The art is fluid and I'd love to see some of the action moving on screen.
