Okay so I immediately had to put spoilers on because I am devastated at the lack of a traditional happy ending. And the lack of resolution between Madeleine and Chanel.

But that aside, this took me awhile to really get into. I had to get over the whiplash of how discombobulated the story felt until things finally started clicking together. It’s a compelling read, unlike any book I’ve ever read.

Alula and Koahu being the main focus of the story made it that much more fascinating, and I feel as though reading it in the alternate order gave them the shine they really deserved. The story of the Albatross and the island of Oaeetee were so captivating and easy to become engrossed in.

I also quite liked the fact that I wasn’t fond of every incarnation of these two characters. For example, Charles Baudelaire was absolutely insufferable, as was Jean-Fracois Feuille. On the other hand, Édmonde, Jeanne, and Madeleine were a pleasure to read about.

This is definitely a book I’ll come back to, as I’d like to get past that initial whiplash I felt upon starting it this first time around.
