This is probably my favorite of the Hainish Cycle I've read. I found the Left Hand of Darkness rather dull, so I guess I'm in the minority. Wish I could give this one 4.5 stars.

Amazing how little it's aged since the 70s, though I sort of wish for more complex femme characters to be honest. The spiral structure of the narrative is very well done, although it did make the beginning hard to follow and a bit slow. I only fully appreciated it once I'd gotten closer to the end and I appreciate the way it mimics the subject matter of reconciliation of sequence and simultaneity.

I loved reading about the alternative society in Anarres and appreciated the thought put into the ambiguous nature of the utopia. I've done quite a bit of thinking on utopias and I always appreciate Le Guin's commitment to really showing us what they'd be like, with her anthropologist background.
