Book 3 of the Department Q series returns to the thrilling pace and cat and mouse detective work of Book 1. Carl Morck may not be the world's best detective, but he has a knack for catching fascinating cases and a surprising persistence for someone so grumpy about even showing up to the office and interacting with his colleagues. His associates, Rose and Assad, are given more depth in this installment, a valuable investment in time and pages on behalf of the author, whose brilliance lies in the interplay between grotesquely dark depictions of human wickedness and delightful banter that is used to deflect real warmth and empathy. This case is a compelling one, and the heroism of the women on the periphery are as much to thank for it's resolution as Carl and Assad's semi-charmed kind of investigation. Action sequences and breakthroughs are handled with real suspense - including a wild car and train chase - making Conspiracy of Faith a fun ride.
