I just discovered this author's series, so late to the party! I love hard boiled detective novels.  I think this character also adds a level of complexity, given his ethnicity, his war experiences, and his upbringing.  I found myself wanting him to be successful and angered at the daily injustices he faces just for existing.  I will be reading more.
