The Umbra King by Jamie Applegate Hunter

1.0

I am not having luck with Romantasy books. Maybe they aren’t my jam or maybe I need to stop letting TikTok recommend books? I’m not sure.

I was going to give this two stars but then it all fell apart about 70% in and I gave up on this book at 75%. It’s like two different people were writing this.

Good - I can’t think of a single thing

Ok - the tension between the two was going well at the middle and was the reason I had planned on 2 stars.

Bad - buckle up cus there’s a lot.

- everything is over analyzed and explained within an inch of life as if the reader is too dumb to figure it out on their own. This seems to be the main short fall of all of the bad Romantasy I’ve read lately (it’s been all of them). Let me use my imagination ffs.

-paragraph structure is dull with an opening line … middle bit middle bit middle bit… closing line that mirrors the opening line. It’s extremely boring to read

- it’s a incredibly cliche paint by numbers plot where nothing really happens. I swear these authors all have the same outline and have to tick off certain spicy/romantic plot points on the outline. Or maybe they are just closing their eyes and throwing darts at a poster then including that without ever actually working to see if it logically makes sense.

- these two are like someone is mashing Ken and Barbie’s bits together. When they get it on it seems forced and I didn’t care about them in the slightest. I stopped reading at the spicy bit because it was just so cliche

- the leading plot in this was was women fighting over a man. BARF. Why are we still dragging ourselves down like this?
