what an complex dark fantasy. the book starts out being one thing but by the end turns into something completely different. i really enjoy when the main character of a novel is unlikable, but not despicable. this book uses its fantasy world and characters to make important points about relevant issues to our society like colonialism and the nasty cost of power. i think one of the most important parts of this book is the idea that having good intentions doesn’t necessarily mean you are good, it is instead the result of your actions that determines your goodness. what happens when your good intentions result in suffering for others?
