Maud Martha
by Gwendolyn Brooks
A quiet, simple, elegant book that features snippets and vignettes of the ordinary live of an ordinary black woman in the 1940’s. Maud Martha muses on concerns, struggles and a few instances of happiness while quietly enduring the trials and tribulations that go with being a Black woman. While she wants more for her life (to be cherished), she bears her disappointments with quiet grace. As an extra bonus, Maud Martha’s life centers around Chicago neighborhoods where I grew up. I learned of this book from one of my favorite things, a conversation about books between two Black women, Brittany Luse and Tracy Thompson on the podcast, The Stacks.
