Overgrowth
by Mira Grant
Hard science fiction by Mira Grant is always reliable and I love them. By now they are a bit predictable and repetitive but I do not mind at all because her dialogue and snark are good, and it's just FUN (murderous aliens aside). It's a standalone which is nice, and has a solid story arc through the whole book. Like, first page you know that aliens are gonna invade earth, and Anastasia has told everyone for decades that aliens are invading, and yet when they do come it's still like 'oh shit she was right' and entertaining in the respect of humans will be humans (stupid) and ngl kinda deserve it. Governments act just how you'd expect, chaos ensues, etc etc.
I also loved the queer rep, because her boyfriend is trans and there are numerous occasions where they juxtapose her "i'm an alien" to his "i'm a man" and indeed they receive very different reactions from most sucky people - "oookay" indulgent to her and "okay sure" mocking to him. I loved their relationship and references to her own struggles with her sexuality while navigating his transition years ago.
Also, I don't wanna spoil anything but also it's kinda implied if you are paying attention, but I did like the themes of nature vs nurture regarding who Anastasia would side with once the aliens arrived. Yes she is an alien, but has been raised alongside/by humans and loves humans so where do her loyalties lie, and are her actions justifiable?
