Apex Magazine Issue 59 by Sigrid Ellis

Like any anthology, it's a mixed bag of things you like, things you don't, and things that either leave no impression or seem too obscure to be worth much.

My favorite story was "Repairing the World", which was an interesting peek at a Fringe-like world struggling against the incursion of other realities. I would've read an entire novel about the world and the characters.

"Perfect" was a good opener for the issue, a sharp bite of flash fic, more amuse-bouche than meal, but whetting the appetite perfectly for the things to come.

"The Cultist's Son" was an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how I feel about the execution. The physical violence fits the characters & situation, but I feel it's still questionable if it needs to be there, or adds anything to the story.

The Pamela Dean story proves to me what I felt from reading one previous novel: she writes encompassing worlds that, in the end, are generally unsatisfying and don't leave enough to really bite into.
