Had a great time with this debut! I'm very much in my courtly intrigue era right now.
I think the pace of Òdòdó's character arc could be uneven at times (like she would sometimes become more naïve than she had shown herself to be in the recent past simply because the plot required it), but that never took me out of the world, which is a big testament to how invested I was in it.
If you're of my generation and devoured The Royal Diaries as a youngster, you'll probably enjoy this more grown-up version. I'd also recommend it to teens who are interested in world history and girl power coming of age stories.
Hashtag good for her, and I loved Rótìmí as Òdòdó's eventual second in command, but RIP "Kọ̀lọ̀," you deserved better and should have been there to help split the job. The road to glory is truly paved with tragic sacrifices.
