Could not finish this book at all. The 42 year-old male lead, Devin, oozes loser. He talks about his d*ck every other page, has the personality of a rich and severely out of touch frat boy, likes making fun of and humiliating minors just because, and several times demeans a community center for marginalized people within the town because he can’t personally see why it’s an admirable thing for the bisexual female lead to protect.
As a queer person myself, this aspect of his character was just so textbook homophobic cishet male that it was laughable. Devon in his entirety was unlikable and irredeemable to me, simply because everything I’ve mentioned is such an innate part of his character.
To elaborate, I’m insulted that as a reader I am supposed to see Devon as someone I would want to be with. Someone who I am supposed to see as attractive and worth fighting for.
Again, laughable. I would not touch a man like this if he offered me a billion dollars.
Unfortunately, this genre of male love interest has become increasingly common. It is so difficult to find a romance book that has complex but well-written characters that don’t have 4chan energy these days.
The final nail in this rotting coffin was when the author mentioned Krav Maga, which is disgusting and ignorant.
It is easy for me to say that I will not be touching any more books written by this author.
