3.5

Might as well be a 3.75 , because it did grow on me in the second half.

The first half of the book was super slow and I was ready to DNF but kept reading and I did end up enjoying it more than I thought.

Because the book is set in 1650 Germany, there are some german words which, as a native german speaker, seemed very random and not very fitting for the flow of the story to me. I just don't see a reason why the mayor was addressed as "bürgermeister" and not as mayor.
Was it odd ? Yes. Did it (negatively) affect my reading experience? No.
I can't speak for non native german speakers but I do feel like some sort of glossary would have been I good idea.

The characters were fine. Can't really say I particularly liked or disliked anyone.

The story did pick up a bit in the second half with both pacing and action/reveals/etc.
