I liked the conclusion to this story, and the book is fun, but the writing felt juvenile. And I read plenty of YA, so it’s not simply about genre. We were told the same facts several times, as if we needed reminding and the reader could not be trusted to remember things.

And it has the same shortcoming as the first book: Talking about tech and coding in a way that makes it not feel believable. If you know nothing about coding, it probably will not bother you lol Otherwise, the weaker point in the word building is the lack of depth when it came to explaining the immersiveness of Warcross. I know it was explained as “the technology makes your brain believe it” but I don’t find that enough when you’re making the characters interact with their environment so much inside Warcross. Also, the idea that they could just walk around Zero’s mind and run away from the bots, and the bots kept multiplying and chasing them, as if things wouldn’t just happen instantaneously inside of this “AI mind” (because Zero is not a person, so even the idea of perusing around in his mind is… idk) felt a bit too silly.

Still, even with the shortcomings, I did appreciate the idea and always love a dystopian sci-fi moment based on games like this. Just would have liked deeper word building, which would likely require longer books, to be fair.
