Jackaby by William Ritter
4.0

I had high expectations for this book and I'm so glad it did not disappoint! You've probably heard this description before but this is basically a supernatural Sherlock Holmes with a female Watson and it's every bit as awesome as it sounds :) The writing is good, it's incredibly funny in a subtle and self-deprecating kind of way and it's just such a fast an easy read. It's weakest point in my opinion was the actual mystery, and even that managed to surprise me in the end. The most brilliant part of this book were its characters, all of them (Douglas!!). Jackaby is self-centered and oblivious but caring and just brilliant. Think BBC Sherlock, but more endearing. Abigail is my new favourite girl. After so many special snowflakes, reading about a victorian girl whose dream is to just have an adventure and all the ways she pushed her limits because she wanted so much more from life than to be a wife was wonderful. And she's just so damn cool :) Plus, not a single hint of romance between the two of them!! Just respect, admiration and reluctant affection for each other - I almost cried with happiness :)
