Almost DNF’d after the sexist drivel on the second page (which unfortunately repeats throughout the book), and now wish I would have. Different flavors of sexism/misogyny, toxic masculinity, judgy religious crap, confusing plot…just very disappointed. The bones were there, but it needed a LOT more work. It unfortunately it had just enough decent writing that I kept ignoring my gut and would trudge on through all the problematic (and also boring) content. Enough so that I was somewhat considering trying the next book out…until I read in a comment that there’s a full on rape scene in book 3. So continuing this series is a big ol’ NOPE from me.
and I’m still just so honestly shocked that this was written by a woman. This came out in 2006, so I hope the author has recognized her internalized misogyny and has worked on that by now. We get enough of it from crappy men - we don’t need women shilling that too (that and toxic masculinity being regarded as romantic or just good in any sense)
