It is a fine story overall, tackling themes of social hierarchy—where children are given gifts based on their social status. The poor boy receives a shabby book, while the rich girl is given an expensive doll, showing the gap between them. 

But the story remains disturbing—particularly in how Julian marries the girl who received the expensive doll just to attain her father’s wealth. He had begun planning this when she was still 11 years old.
