Baby Doll by Hollie Overton

3.5 stars. I think I was a little too excited to read this book. The recap and reviews made it sound like this book was an intense thriller that would keep me on the edge of my seat. But I didn’t find that to be exactly true. The story follows Lily, a young woman that was kidnapped when she was 17, and has been held captive for 8 years. Until 1 day, she and her now young daughter escape. What follows is the fallout from such a devastating event and how the family has learned to cope with this tragedy. I thought this book was going to be more like the novel Room. But I found that this book lacked excitement. The characters were flat, and the events were fairly monotonous. Yes there were a couple of twists and plot peaks, but there was also a lot of paragraphs dedicated to describing Lily and Abby’s twin bond, and their mom’s weird relationship status. If the book wasn’t marketed as a thriller, I would have approached it with a different mindset and enjoyed it more. But alas, as a thriller, I found it lacking.
