I'm not entirely sure what to rate this one. There's a moment when the book shifts gears, and you know it's coming, but when it does...
Normally I love a story where the good guy goes bad, even if it's just for a moment. But this one never fully gelled for me. Maybe I read it too fast? Maybe I just knew it was coming and wanted to see what would happen *after*... and poor Jo goes Dark Phoenix twice in one book. The second one comes as a shock and it gets pretty confusing around that point, but it's the first transformation that fell flat for me.
I suspect this is a book that will hold up better upon re-reading the series in order, but on it's own it doesn't hold up quite as well.
Bonus points given for how creepy the cover looks when upside down.
