Can Everyone Please Calm Down? A Guide to 21st Century Sexuality by Mae Martin

funny informative reflective fast-paced

5.0

Mae Martin thinks so critically about what sexuality is (and gender a bit too), and breaks down what labels are, why we need them, how they can be harmful based on what the ideal world is for sexual and gender identities. Mae also questions all the language we use such as the fact that we call it a sexual orientation, centering it around our desires towards others rather than our own emotions and feelings. The book is also hilarious and endearing. Mae gives you prewritten responses for common homophobic questions, and rips apart some common misconception about queerness. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get some basic knowledge about LGBTQIA+ terminology, but also to people already well-versed who want to re-examine, re-invent, and explore the fluidity of everything.
