The Kill Clause by Gregg Hurwitz
3.5

3.5 stars.

Tim Rackley is a deputy US marshal who is excellent at his job until his whole life is shattered by the brutal murder of his own daughter. Rackley feels helpless as he watches the killer walk free on a legal technicality, leaving him to explore his own options that lead him down a path to a shadowy no-man’s-land between justice and the law. He stumbles upon “the Commission”, a vigilante group of people who have also experienced the loss of a loved one via violent crime. The Commission cleans up society’s ‘mistakes’, but Rackley soon learns that playing God is excruciating and fearsome, leading him to a desperate battle to save his marriage, his career, and his soul.

I’ve never read a Gregg Hurwitz book before but have heard nothing but good things about this work. Since this book has been sitting on my bookshelf for years, I decided it would be a great time to give it a try.

THE KILL CLAUSE is a fast-paced, tense thriller that hooked me in from the first few pages and kept me interested right til the end. It navigates the grey areas of this world and the imperfections of the justice system nicely. Grief is a theme that is prevalent in Tim’s thoughts and actions but doesn’t translate well to the reader.

I will say that I listened to this as an audiobook and I did find it a bit hard to follow at times because several of the characters have similar sounding names.

The ending is action-packed and thrilling, making a good conclusion to this novel. That said, I’m note sure that I’ll continue on with the Tim Rackley series, but I would be interested in checking out Hurwitz’s Orphan X series instead.
