Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

5.0

After reading The Hunger Games there was no way that I couldn’t re-read Catching Fire so I did. I don’t even know where to start with this… It quickly follows on from where we left of, the games are now over and the victors are going to back to their lives although now they’ve upgraded to a special part of the district. Despite this they still carry on as though they were before, Katniss still goes hunting with Gale and Peeta still bakes. However it doesn’t take long for you to realise that something’s wrong – especially when President Snow pops in for a visit.

Thought you’d never read another scene set in the arena? Well think again. As a punishment for Katniss and Peeta’s stunt in the games they have changed the rules ever so slightly. All the best loved characters that you didn’t see much in the first book come back in the second which was great. You got to see a new side to some characters and their stories just developed a little bit more. In addition to this you’re also introduced into new characters, most of them are victors from the previous games. My personal favourite was Finnick. I just love his character, he’s smooth, charismatic, funny but a fighter. He brings a bit of comic relief to the book at times when it’s much needed.

The novel, much like it’s predecessor has a lot of dark twists and turns in the book, leaving it on a cliffhanger with words so shocking it sends shivers down your spine. Collins is a fantastic writer who knows how to keep her readers on their toes. She brings out every emotion possible within her words, one minute you’ll be laughing and smiling and then the next you’ll have tears in your eyes… That’s how fast paced the book is. A lot is put into a book of only 472 pages and it can be easily read within a few hours as it’s so gripping.

There is so much that I can write about this book however I don’t want to give too much away for anyone that hasn’t read it. It is simply a fantastic book and if you loved The Hunger Games then you’ll love this. It leaves you wanting more and throws you straight into Mockingjay‘s waiting arms. I would recommend this book and series to anyone, there are so many different levels to it and it’s not just centered on the violence that so many people think it is.
