Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro

4.25

This was by no means a fully original story, a lot of the elements were very reminiscent of other stories that I've either read or watched before. However, the familiarity of it all did bring a welcoming sense of comfort to it all. In the sense that I felt like I already knew this world and its characters.

I loved the portrayal of the villains, and the exploration of dual morality. The cast of characters were all pretty interesting and I'm looking forward to learn more about them. Although I do wish that all the different relationships between them had been more developed. For a 600+ page book, there definitely would have been room for it.

The book goes back and forth in its timeline, which I often find disorienting. But here we got to spend a decent amount of time in one place before shifting. Writing-wise, though, there were some sentences that were either unnecessary lengthy, or just poorly structured.

The vibes were, on the other hand, immaculate. J.M. Miro has created a gothic atmosphere with a delightful amount of creepiness. And who can argue with a classic setting such as Victorian England?
