They Were Here Before Us: A Novella in Pieces by Eric LaRocca

5.0

Eric LaRocca has such an incredible touch to his work that truly draws me in. Though oftentimes the subject matter is macabre, you will find plenty of beauty in all of his stories. They Were Here Before Us: A Novella in Pieces is LaRocca’s best work yet, and I find it so cool to watch this author grow with every book they release.

I had pre-ordered a signed copy of this book way back in July, and once it was delivered a couple of weeks ago I was so excited to crack it open. The artwork was so beautiful (as it always is for his books) and the description was appealing. I knew I’d be into it.

I was captivated by the stories in this one. You’ll read odd love stories between animals and humans, feel a mother bird’s pain as she is haunted by a violent young boy, and read a bit of a cosmic horror tale as well. And there’s everything else in between. LaRocca’s genre-bending novella is sure to put you mentally all over the place. It is dark, disquieting, strange— yet filled with love. All kinds of love, even the love we deem inappropriate. Eric plays around with many ideas, especially with the idea of how far love can and should reach. Is love truly love no matter who— or what it's between?

It’s a quick 98 pages of disturbed writing that I easily devoured. Anything by LaRocca will probably have you questioning both your own mental clarity— but I’m always impressed at how beautifully he can capture such dark stories. I highly recommend checking this novella out and putting LaRocca on your authors-to-watch radar if you haven’t done so already.
