No one creates that feeling of oppressive anxiousness in normal everyday things like Elena Ferrante. I mean I am a fan and I would literally read her grocery lists if I could but this book is flawless. It's such a succinct and dark exploration of what it means to be a mother beyond what is the only acceptable narrative of children are magical beings that make life magical. The ambivalence and anxiety and unending responsibility of motherhood is so brilliantly captured. Elena Ferrante can do no wrong.
