I am not entirely sure what I think of this, although I do think that it didn't quite scratch the itch I wanted it to it was an engaging and entertaining reading experience. I guess I just didn't super click with the characters, or get as invested in the relationships or plot very much. I did (and do) love the magic system though, like a lot, especially the bonding to house thing!
Overall, unfortunately not as much my vibe as I hoped but still a good time and one of my favourite magic systems I've ever read about.
2024 reread
Well, knowing the tone of this and what to expect I am delighted to say that this time, the exact itch I had was scratched perfectly by this book! Loved the characters and their dynamics, and of course the magic system and world building! I am very glad I managed to weasel my way into gaining my own copies of this (and the other two books in the trilogy) because for right now it's perfect!
