Ugh, what a disappointment!

The book started out strong, stylish and seductive, hinting at many mind games and double-plays. The setting and themes were familiar, but I looked forward to how the story would unfold and make them its own. And then...it didn't.

As soon as 'Act 2' started, it became obvious that this story would rely on overused narrative devices, peppered with increasingly outlandish 'twists' to try to remain original.

Also, for a narrative claiming feminist values, it easily reduces women to the scorn they have suffered at the hands of men. While the 'revenge' narrative can be immensely satisfying, here we see a woman in her 30s with a successful career who's crowning achievement is orchestrated entirely for the benefit of...
revenge on a man who assaulted her over a decade ago
. I am not minimizing the damage of such an assault, but I do question the 'feministness' of tying the apex of her career to it. These women are consumed by their revenge at the expense, it seems, of their personal and professional lives. In the end, their raison d'ĂȘtre is still a man.
