Thanatos by Eva Pohler

1.0

I'm sad to say, I did not like this book. I see now that the description here on Goodreads, and the description on my Kindle are very different, and maybe if I had seen this description I would have saved myself the trouble.

I try so hard not to give out one stars. I try to look for something redeemable, anything at all, but in this case, I was frustrated and annoyed and disappointed the entire time I was reading it.

Basically, this book is Twilight, except for two chapters towards the end where it is the Hunger Games, and then the ending is supremely unsatisfying on top of all that.

Theresa falls into a comma after the death of her parents, where she meets Thanatos and kisses him, thinking this is all but a dream. He falls in love with her and makes a deal with his father that if she can avenge her parents murder, and if she truly wants to be with him, she can become his bride and be made immortal. In striking this deal, he himself takes on a mortal form and has 40 days to woo her.

First off, despite having 40 days, he actually only spends a week with her. And that week takes place two weeks before his deadline. So what was he doing for the other 26 days? And what was she doing for those 26 days? She doesn't appear to be all broken up over her parents deaths, that's for sure. We get told sometimes that she is sad, but we don't actually see her dealing with this pain or processing it. The book just skips to happy fun times grooming horses.

Secondly, the further I got into this book the more I realized how many hallmarks of Twilight it had. To the point where I briefly wondered if this had started it's life as Twilight fanfiction but with gods. Not that there is anything wrong with that in most cases, it's just that for me, all the parts that reminded me of Twilight were the parts of Twilight I really didn't like.

And Thirdly, for two or three chapters, this book just becomes the Hunger Games only bad. Everything that made Katniss interesting is missing from Theresa. She doesn't know how to use a weapon, she doesn't know how to survive on the land, or make traps, and she doesn't have the desire or the drive to kill, even though it would give her everything she wants. This whole section of the book was terrible as it's supposed to be tense but the Gods just kept shouting nonsense in response to her prayers and that ruined the suspense. She was never actually in any danger.

Finally, the book doesn't end on a satisfying note. Or even on an interesting note.

Over all, I wanted to like this book, I was delivered something completely different, and I wouldn't recommend. I'm very sorry to those who do like it, it just wasn't for me.
