The Rising Tide by Ann Cleeves

4.0

I borrowed this book from the library and practically inhaled it in two days as it kept me so hooked.

Cleeves always knows how to create a thrilling and enticing murder mystery that keeps me guessing until the end. I never call it and I love the feeling of being surprised in the end. She does tend to stick to the same formula in her books with how it unravels but as the mystery and character changes, I never see it as boring.

The characters this time had a very shared history and that past, trying to understand it, is why I enjoyed it so much. The characters never tell the whole story, just little snippets that you have to try and work out yourself. Vera is still an undeniably amazing character and detective; I love her as a character, she’s steadfast and strong and absolutely no-nonsense.

The ending, not the reveal of the murderer, but the final ending really shook me. I didn’t see it coming and to see Vera loose one of the team was heartbreaking. She’s not almost the most tactile, nor does she offer a lot of praise or affection but her heart is in the right place. To see her howl at the end almost brought a tear to my eye as she grieves a member of her team and struggles with both her grief and her guilt.
