A Thousand Reasons by Mariah Dietz
2.0
A Thousand Reasons is a spin off to a previous series by Mariah that features some of the supporting characters, namely Max and Ace, and the H Wes. I confess, I haven’t read that series. Whilst this is a standalone I think it would have been better had I read the other books.
I didn’t understand the dynamic of the relationship between Max, Wes and Ace and for that reason I couldn’t get my head around it. As the story developed, I found they were the best of friends. Dynamic discovered but a bit late for me because I was already jumping to conclusions about Leela and about Ace.
Leela is a driven student. Committed to her goal of becoming an ER doctor but she is from a poor family and rather than support her dreams and ambitions, her family are complete twats. Worse than that for me, was the fact that she judges herself too. She is a reverse snob, judging the monied people, like Ace without knowing them. I didn’t warm to her.
Wes was sweet. I wanted to know more about him. I wanted to look after him. Cook for him. Buy him candles.
The wisest person in the book was Jamal, a boy who Leela tutors. His words were spot on!
The plot - poor girl supporting her family, family issues involving drugs and self worth sounds like a perfect mix.
