Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid

Three witch sisters live with their warlock father in a ramshackle estate in an industrial Russian town. The father rules over them ruthlessly, angry at the world because he suffers under a spell that makes him never satisfied in any aspect of his live. The middle sister has suffered the most and most varied abuses in her life, and on the surface seems the most cowed, most submissive, simplest of the daughters. But when she sneaks out with her sisters to watch a dance company perform, she falls in love with the primary dancer, and she discovers hidden strengths to fight the monsters in her life for the chance to let that love grow.

I generally really like stories that are heavily influenced by folklore, but although I do recognize the storytelling skills here, it’s just a little too dark and bleak for me.
