The Bromeliad Trilogy: Truckers/Diggers/Wings
by Terry Pratchett
This was a lovely little story about lovely little people, the nomes, and how they found that the world is bigger than they ever knew.
Plot-wise, the field nomes are dying out and decide to hop on a truck to go somewhere new. They meet other nomes who live in a department store and don't believe there is an "Outside". Then the store nomes and the field nomes need to leave the store and find a new home. They know about humans, but don't interact with them (nomes think humans are bit dim), and don't understand why they keep encroaching on nome habitat.
This is a satirical fable with Pratchett poking hard at religion. There's some ecological morals here, as well as some philosophical ones, and they're all wrapped up in a fun story that should be entertaining for teens/preteens.
