A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

5.0

‘A book to spark joy’ says The Times and I couldn’t agree more. Every time I picked it up to read I felt happy. A Gentleman in Moscow is the story of Alexander Rostov (aka The Count), a member of the aristocracy who, after the Russian Revolution is a Former Person sentenced to life house arrest in the Metropol Hotel in central Moscow. So far, so boring?? Absolutely not. The Count is such a fantastic character, the writing is so tongue-in-cheek and slick, the life that The Count builds for himself in the hotel is interesting and full. And it was really funny. There were small bits I didn’t really get because I know nothing about Russian history or Russian literature but it didn’t matter. I would highly recommend it, such a joy to read indeed.
