Insurrection by Thomas M. Reid
2.0
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No

Let's be so clear. I expect figurative and literal backstabbing, chaos, and a certain level of edgeladyry in this setting. That's part of the appeal. But this one was a slog. Knowing how to write women as doing things other than breasting boobily, slutshaming each other, complaining, and getting injured/taken prisoner/tortured seems like something that would be important to know how to do when building out your dark fantasy matriarchy, but what do I know, I’m just a girl 🤷🏻‍♀️

The boys don’t escape the one-dimensional portrayals and/or stereotypes that don't make sense for their culture either. Pharaun is completely rewritten to be an impulsive horndog, and Ryld and Valas are just kind of...there.

Now that Hallistra and Danifae have joined the party, I’m hoping the rest of the authors in the series have a better idea of what to do with them.

(this also had no bearing on my review, but that cover art is INSANE. did anyone tell the artist that's Quenthel's nephew??? she's definitely serving though. i'd expect nothing less.)
