I am really having a tough time with this. I am audio-ing it and the reader is phenomenal, if she were not, I would have set it aside unfinished quite a while ago. The writing is superb. I don’t mean the plot, story line or characters, I mean the actual words. Holly Black really knows how to turn a phrase and that is such a shame because this story sucks despite the beautiful way she strings words together.

I was excited because as much as I can point out the flaws in the Twilight series, I also devoured it like crack! This crap is addicting so when I read the summary I thought this was going to fit the bill. The very basic idea sounds promising. There is a vampire epidemic (she treats vampirism as an infection) and those infected and suffering are quarantined in “Cold Towns”. “Sounds” is the operative word in that sentence.

Not only do the Cold Towns simply not make sense when the idea is fleshed out, they obviously don’t actually keep the vamps in. Cold Towns are this massive, all hours party which is live streamed to the world via video feeds, blogs, Twitter, etc. Silly. I mean really, really silly. The humans in the town run around with permanent shunts in their veins to make their blood easily accessed by the vamps and yet aren’t turned themselves so as to keep up the food supply and down the demand. Why would uninfected humans volunteer? Wouldn’t work. That’s just the idea of the Cold Towns. Now...the characters.

Our main character, Tana, is a sillier dishrag than Bella Swan! She continually forgives the males in her life that abuse her, never learns from her mistakes and just limps around through this life doing nothing that seems like the obvious or smart thing to do! She drove me insane!! Her ex-boyfriend, Aiden, is an Asshole (intentional capital A) and the twins introduced, Midnight and Winter are just kooky and weird with no purpose! I’m all for quirky and weird, and even the occasional asshole, but they must move the story along and no one in this book seems to do that!

I am about three quarters of the way through and if this doesn’t shape up, or my next audio book becomes available at the library I am chucking it.

So...I finished. It may have gotten worse in the last quarter of the book. Every single thing I whinged about above just got worse.

*shakes head*
