The Watsons by Jane Austen

2.0

Since The Watson’s is an abandoned novel, I cannot honestly give it a favorable or unfavorable rating. However, I can see why Austen abandoned this novel. It is nowhere near the same brilliance as her other novels.

Austen had an interesting idea: a young woman Emma is raised by a wealthy aunt after her mother passed away. This aunt remarries and sends Emma back to her father and siblings who are strangers. She had to learn how to fit in with her family who are poor and not of the same mindset as her.

It’s instantly noticeable that the writing style is different than Austen’s other books. The plot is aimless and not interesting. The main character Emma looks down upon everyone and judges their behavior. She is truly unlikeable and we only see other characters through her eyes. I miss the insight into human behavior so prevalent in Austen’s books.
