Unravel Me
by Tahereh Mafi
Juliette joins the X-Men and further figures out her powers while also deciding if she should be in love with a homicidal maniac’s son. The writing in this book is compelling so I think I’ll keep going, but coming from Romantasy, I find the two MMC‘s less than ideal. Neither one of them really appreciates Juliette for what she’s worth and one seems to love her because she is a freak and not due to any intrinsic potential that she has. Warner in particular seems to want to exploit how messed up she is, which is not a quality in a protagonist that I admire. Juliette’s obsession with the bad boy that she shouldn’t have — true to her namesake — is not the pining, “will she won’t she,” push-pull that I want it to be. In fact, it starts to get a little annoying at the end. But I was patient with Auren in Gild and I have this niggling feeling that I should be patient with Juliette and see her narrative through at least book 3.
